Spotlight on Oh Freedom!

A few years ago I was lucky enough to attend a performance of the musical play Oh Freedom! at College Place Elementary where Judy Brack teaches in Lynnwood, WA. The play follows the history of slavery and segregation through to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s. I was delighted and moved by the story the 4th-6th grade students presented through songs, drama, visuals, and the words of Dr. King and many others who worked for freedom and justice. I noticed the enthusiastic involvement of the performers and the rapt engagement of the children in the audience. In addition to the play itself, the book includes an extensive list of resources for involving students in an integrated study of this period of American History. I encourage any teachers interested in this topic to consider mounting a production of Oh, Freedom!.
