Bessie Jones (1902-1984) was the last active member of the original Georgia Sea Islands Singers and one of the foremost folk artists in the United States.
Drawing from the rich heritage of her childhood growing up in the small black farming community of Dawson, Georgia, Mrs. Jones shares 70 children's activities, many with origins in Africa and slave-era America.
Recorded by folklorist Bess Lomax Hawes, the songs and games include baby games, clapping plays, jumps and skips, singing plays, ring plays, dances, house plays, outdoor games, song and stories.
Perhaps most interesting are the extensive interviews with Bessie Jones, where she talks about the context and enjoyment of the games, and what life was like for children growing up in a community infused with traditional inter-generational music and dance in the early part of the 20th century.
Book, 233 pages.
