Lessons from Literature Marjie Van Gunten and Sharon Mazion
Item #:
MVG-3
Each of these 6 lessons use a children's picture book as the springboard for
inquiry-based learning in composition and improvisation. The lessons are
presented in a sequential order of difficulty and are aimed at students in grades
K-3. The authors write: "Picture books stir the child's imagination and are
a great way to create a classroom climate that is artistic and playful. It is
important not to anticipate the final 'product' so that the creativity is truly the
responsibility of the children. Allowing the children to work deeply in the
discovery process is critical to success with composition."
Here are the picture books used and the concepts explored in each lesson.
Lessons from this group were presented at the AOSA National Conference in
Spokane, WA 2010.
