Pig in the Parlor features repertoire from the play party traditions of the
Ozark Mountain regions of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma which flourished
between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early 1950s. According
to Alan L. Spurgeon play parties were more than simply children's games, but were
in fact the basis of social gatherings that involved people of all ages and reflected
the etiquette and cultural values of the time and place in which they took occurred.
Much of the material included in the book was collected by the
author
from
people who had participated in play parties as young adults, and other pieces are
drawn from early and mid-twentieth century folklore collections.
Each singing game and play party is presented with musical notation,
additional lyrics, directions for the formation and movement components of the
game, and a citation of the source from which it was collected. Book, 25
pages.Click here to view the Table of Contents.
